Capital Cup Sports Festival Announces Full Schedule
LGBTQ+ athletes and sports leagues from around the world will come together in Washington, DC May 30 - June 4, 2025
Washington, DC (May 5, 2025) – Washington, DC boasts one of the most extensive local networks of LGBTQ+ sports teams and leagues in the world and WorldPride is proud to celebrate these communities during the inaugural Capital Cup Sports Festival, in partnership with Team DC. Each of these leagues—along with their athletes, administrators, and volunteers—welcome teams from around the globe to participate in nearly 25 different sporting events.
“Sports have a unique power to unite people across diverse communities and from all corners of the world,” says Grace Thompson, Capital Cup Coordinator. “Even when outside forces attempt to divide us, sport provides a space for us to connect, uplift one another, and build resilience. It teaches us to be strong, determined, and unwavering in the face of obstacles—and that spirit is exactly what the Capital Cup celebrates.”
“Sports offer opportunities to advance awareness, understanding, acceptance, and equality for the LGBTQ+ community and when done genuinely, sports can also create a space for connection and belonging,” shares Ryan Bos, Executive Director of the Capital Pride Alliance. “We’re so excited to bring this event to the city as part of our schedule of events for WorldPride and we look forward to welcoming athletes and teams in friendly celebration and competition.”
